What is your first memory of
What is your first memory of Amtgard?
My fiend invited me over to his house and started talking about Amtgard. We then formed a company with another friend and we fought to see who would be th Captain, I lost. :(
How long have you been playing?
14 or so years
What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
Probably getting my Squires belt.
What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
Ever try to drive through border patrol covered in blood with New Hampshire plates and a New Mexico license? Yeah, they don't really like that.
What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.)
Chicks dig skillz. I have gained many skills in my time in Amtgard. I can sew, I can set up a tent, I write articles sometimes, I have learned leadership and what it takes to make a group with different goals work together, I have learned to delegate when someone else can do it better than me... so many more.
What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
Lining up with my Company brothers and folding up the others sides line.
Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
Nothing I can think of right now. If there is anything I ever feel I want to learn I know I can ask someone and they are glad to help.
What is your favorite event and why?
Great Eastern, I love the people on the East Coast, I love the Company Battles, I love the site, I love the Castle... it's fantastic.
What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole?
I love being able to travel just about anywhere and you already have some built in friends. Travel to any city with an Amtgard group and you have a place to belong.
What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole?
Douchebags, they are becoming more and more rampant. Just because you are the best pool foam swinger doesn't mean you are better than anyone else. King of the dorks is still a dork.
What are your favorite game types?
I love Company Battles, Militia Battles, Castle Battles and Jugging.
What are your least favorite game types?
Open RP, what is my goal?
Do you ever regret starting this game?
Nope.
If you could change one thing about Amtgard, what would you change?
How rich am I? Meh, I would love to see 1000 person events again.
Anything else you would like to add?

Marcil's answers to the Survey
1. What is your first memory of Amtgard?
My first memory was when the only people on the battlefield that I felt confident enough to fight was this one girl and my brother (people that used to be in PV 4.5 years ago.) I would always flinch and cower to anyone else that would even come near me, oh and breaking some big scary guy's arrows on a tree. :p
2. How long have you been playing?
Since January 1st, 2005
3. What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
So far, getting my Lord title. That made me extremely happy.
4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
Can't think of one...Oh wait, getting stabbed so hard in the chest at Clan that I was out of it for pretty much the whole day.
5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.)
Whatever I learn at A&S and on the battlefield.
6. What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
Improving my skills and training my hardest to become a better fighter.
7. Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
I would like to learn how to improve my skills and repertoire (any takers?)
8. What is your favorite event and why?
Hearvest War, the atmosphere is nice. Clan is to big at the moment for me to adjust to, once I make more friends things should work out better.
9. What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole?
Feeling like I can achieve something in life that feels right, and most of the people.
10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole?
Attitudes and disrespect.
11. What are your favorite game types?
Quests with (actual) walls, flag battles, Warlord, Ironman, and sometimes ditching.
12. What are your least favorite game types?
(Shatter) battlegames, regular tournaments (Crown quals, weaponmaster), Large scale(open field) battles, and jugging.
13. Do you ever regret starting this game?
Just once... But I can't remember why.
14. If you could change one thing about Amtgard, what would you change?
I don't know...
15. Anything else you would like to add?
Meh
Survey says...
Showing up with two of my brothers to the park on Sunday to play a kind of game that we had no idea even existed before that weekend.
Since March of 1996.
Olympiad 2002. The event was rather dull, but for some reason I had the greatest time. To this day I can't figure out why that is.
Oddly, I can't think of anything that sticks out as being bad. Maybe I've just shoved the bad parts to the back of my mind.
Sewing, leather working, armoring, event planning, stabbing, boffer construction, capturing ninja, primitive fire starting, and dabbling in many more.
Stabbing. The fighting is what brings it all together for me.
Proper fighting analysis. For some reason it is always just out of grasp.
Clan at Sleepygrass. For some bizarre reason I just enjoyed wandering up and down that road through the canyon for hours on end, especially at night.
Fighting. The game is the core of the whole society.
People that can't work together for the betterment of the game. Typically these end up being the people that "hate politics" and say "it's just a game" but don't do anything but politic and gossip, in some cases to the point that they don't actually play Amtgard. What is up with that?
Class battlegames where there is some goal other than kill the opposing team. Reduced death counts are a plus.
Bad quests. If you only have one way to complete a quest, something is wrong.
No.
A lot of the things that I wanted to change in the past have slowly been changing. Rules are more unified, kingdoms have a say in what happens to Amtgard as a whole, and even some of the awards now mean basically the same thing no matter which kingdom you reside in.
At this point the thing I would most like to see is some sort of national event organization body, even if it's just the Circle of Monarchs. They would be responsible for dealing with schedule conflicts and setting up some sort of system to maximize event participation by date/location.
Goldenvale isn't a real kingdom.

Survey ...
What is your first memory of Amtgard?
February, 2007 @ Pegasus Valley. I was still living in Virginia and flew to New Mexico to visit my GF Elena and we went to Amtgard and I played with Joseph/Chief and Frenchy bugged me enough I fought.
How long have you been playing?
Since February 2007, though more actively since July 2007.
What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
Hmmm ... there was a day at PV where I cleaned up as a wizard and that was a pretty good day. I hope that'll be replaced some day.
What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
The first day I did amtgard. I was treated pretty badly. There were a couple of people nice to me, but there were 2 people who were either rude or stand-offish to me for every person who was nice and wanted to teach me something. Fortunately that park has grown by leaps and bounds since and I consider it a very open and friendly and fun park now.
What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.)
I've learned how to make some weapons, I've learned most of the classes, how to be a PM and a handful of other things. Nothing I really use in the mundane world.
What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
Throwing fireballs at people.
Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
Just more sword technique, but I'll learn more as time goes by.
What is your favorite event and why?
Harvest War and Rakis. I always have fun at Harvest War; or at least I did last year. I love running Lottery of Doom. Also, I enjoyed Rakis because it was a new group of people. There are a lot of "stick jocks" down there and they tend to be the easiest type for me to kill (as a wizard, I mean). That's always fun.
What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole?
That it is open and has something for most people; fighting yet it also has a lot of cultural things and people are allowed to be geeks without getting (real) rocks thrown at them.
What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole?
Elitism.
What are your favorite game types?
Battle games, Lottery of Doom.
What are your least favorite game types?
Pros vs. Joes, jugging (its a fine game, I just don't enjoy it)
Do you ever regret starting this game?
Nope, I'm glad I had Drukara to make me stick with it after my first experience.
If you could change one thing about Amtgard, what would you change?
Hand shots would count. Sorry, but in medieval times they didn't generally make swords to protect your hands from other sword shots. They were made so your hand would be protected when you slammed it against a shield or piece of armor. Furthermore, if you want to protect your hand, make a sword with a hand guard on it. *shakes my head*
Anything else you would like to add?
Yes, foot on ground is the second stupidest thing I've ever heard of.
"We are men of actions. Lies do not become us."
~The Man in Black - 'The Princess Bride'
What is your first memory of
What is your first memory of Amtgard?
The first time I came out to the park, when I was 12(literally). I stared at people fighting for probably about a half hour, looking like an idiot, trying to figure out what the rules were. The first person to talk to me was Demoral, and oddly enough, he knew just what to say to get me to start fighting. It would have been a fantastic day if I had not had to have sat through the Marshall's 4-hour lecture on how to play Amtgard.
How long have you been playing?
It has been probably around 6 years, I think. I vaguely remember having just turned 12, and then lying and saying I was 13 so that I could be allowed on the field, because I had been told by my friend that 13 was field age, rather than 14.
What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
There have been a lot of things that have seemed really great when they happen, but now, in retrospect, they are not the golden events I remember them to be. I don't really subscribe to the "good old days" idea; my best memory in Amtgard has yet to happen.
What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
I remember once, when I was knew, and I did not yet remember everyone's names and faces terribly well. There was this one guy that I had confused for another guy with a similar name, and throughout the day I annoyed him so much that he threatened me with physical violence. At the time it has scared the shit out of me, but as I look at it now, I was annoying enough back then that I can understand how hard it was to tolerate me.
What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.)
As far as A&S goes, I have picked up a little bit of many things, but by far my greatest skill(learned in Amtgard, at least) is weapon making. I can make some pretty sweet weapons now, and it has been a long journey to that point.
I am also fortunate that Amtgard has taught me how to deal with the "real world" in respect to social behaviors. I had a very sheltered life before Amtgard, and it had left me with many socially backward mannerisms that I am now glad to be rid of.
What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
While I really like ditching and just hanging out with people, I really enjoy the battlegames the most I think. RPG's and such have always been some of my favorite games, and I have always liked fighting, and this is a really nice combination of the two. There is enough flexibility that you could really set up any sort of game you wanted, and even when we just do vanilla battlegames I can easily entertain myself.
Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
I have for a while wanted to make my own armor and garb, but finding the time, space, and motivation to do these things has been like pulling teeth. The satisfaction of making things that look nice and perform well is one of the best feelings I have ever had, and garbing and armoring are really good avenues for that sort of thing. I've been learning little bits for a while now, but I really just wish I had found the time to get really into this stuff.
What is your favorite event and why?
Harvest War. Everything I could ever want in an event has been there with regularity. And this year, as co-autocrat(hi Glenalth!), I intend to make sure that is like this for everyone who goes as well. One of the great things about Harvest War is that it has made me feel like I'm actually doing something good for our game for once, which is a wonderful reward in itself.
What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole?
Ok, so you're sitting in the woods, outside a fortress, and trying to keep people from getting in. You just fended off a wave of attackers, and you got 6 kills, which is a personal best. Then, suddenly, you hear this sound, it goes "thump thump thump thump THWACK!"
You have just been killed by an assassin. By the time you heard them coming, it was already too late.
The thrills on the field for this game give me such a rush, and I love every second.
What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole?
Bitching. Honestly, does it matter if you were fighting someone, and in order to be a better foam-combat-nerd than you, they had to cheat? Sluffers are not only terrible fighters, but they want so badly to be bigger nerds than you that they will try to cheat. If a person is already this messed up, let them cheat all they want, and just kill them with your superior fighting.
Sadly, I have in the past been part of the problem. I have changed my policy since then, but there's still a long road ahead of me. Only you can prevent Amtgard bitching.
What are your favorite game types?
I like battles with structures and terrain the best. It's one thing if you are just in the park, but if you are out in a forest, with rocks and a castle, that is awesome.
What are your least favorite game types?
Jugging is fine and all, but I have hated it every time I have played. It's a lot of setup for very little fighting, and the little fighting is more about being as brutal as possible than it is about killing people. Weird.
I also hate sucky quests with a passion. The adventurers need to know right away what they need to do to win, they need to know all the rules right away, and above all else the game needs to make sense. Random monsters, a shoehorned hack-and-slash plot, and some tape on the ground does not make a quest.
Do you ever regret starting this game?
Why would you waste my time with a rhetorical question?
If you could change one thing about Amtgard, what would you change?
Nothing about the game itself is broken enough to where a change in attitude won't fix it. My biggest problems are with people who just can't be bothered to actually play the freaking game.
Anything else you would like to add?
What the hell is Goldenvale? Is that some kind of relic that makes you invisible?
I hate you all very very
I hate you all very very much, mostly Glenalth and Lurker though.
Aww
It's OK, we still love you Chekers. Well except for Lurker, he has some sort of weird shrine build around your old shield.
Mihr's Best Friend
Yes.
Well, if by "shrine" you mean "pile of garbage," then yes, I do.
So when is the relic quest for the Golden Veil?
Now with AIM!
You can have the quest when I
You can have the quest when I come out in July.
hey guys
I'm answering these.
When I first started the group here in DS was full of fun and interesting older folk and during one especially silly princess battle game (which I think Randall was running) Weilok grabbed me (as I was a live flag, hence princess battle) and walked from one end of the field to the other teleporting. While she "cheated" we talked a lot about the game and how being creative keeps it fun and fresh.
Hmm. I think I started right after I turned 14, so, 2000? I'm not sure.
I like remembering my first clan. I camped with Vision (and practically all my friends at the time) and Palas cooked breakfast every morning over the fire pit. Classic clan moment: My friend Douggie (who doesn't play anymore) would shake his fist at any planes flying overhead and yell, "Damn dragons!" and I would practically pee myself.
Even my first day out I noticed the different cliques and how much drama circled among them. For a club that is deeply rooted in all things nerdy sometimes it plays out like a big popularity contest.
A lot relating to my previous answer. I've learned some sewing, how to build a sword that will last, and some martial aspects of the game.
Fighting! Seeing my friends! Fighting my friends!
I should read the rule book.
Clan is amazing. The amount of people that show up, and how far they travel is staggering!
The people are so strange and fun. How else would I have tasted bread made from Amp! Some of my favorite people in the world I met through this game ♥
See question 4.
Capture the flag is always fun.
Super complicated ones that cause fights and yelling and pulling out of rulebooks.
At one point I was a little sad about some things that happened because of the game, but all in all I think it's a good thing.
Wow, I just realized how worthless my opinion on all of this is since I don't know a lick about the politics or planning events. I have nothing to complain about or suggest.
If you really read everything I had to say I will draw you a picture to make up for wasting your time.
Hooray
A picture!

survey says!
1. What is your first memory of Amtgard?
I remember talking to Turanko, my sisters boyfriend at the time, later to be her 1st husband, about this game he was playing and since I had been into the SCA a very long time ago the concept of this game was very appealing to me so I went out to the park in Dark Oasis to watch. I met so many people who would become such a strong influence in my every day life that day that I had no idea what kind of a ride I was really in for. Including my husband Orgy who at the time was just one of Turanko's college friends playing the game and I was married to my 1st husband. Thank the gods for little conversations.
2. How long have you been playing?
Since 1997, so that would be 12 years.
3. What is your happiest memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
I have so many good memories but I would have to say that so far my happiest memory is having court held for me while I ran up the hill they were having it on and watching my husband get his Master Rose at clan. That was a totally awesome moment.
4. What is your worst memory that you will never forget in Amtgard?
Hearing about people I know who are so young and full of life either dying by their own hand, which I still can't grasp, or by someone elses.
5. What skills have you gained both (Sciences? Social? etc.)
I am still gaining them but I would have to say politics. When I started this game I never thought of myself as a politic type person but then I realized I had to find something for me to do since I'm not a fighter so here I am and loving every minute of it.
6. What do you look forward to most during your parks Amtgard days?
Watching my husband fight, talking to all the great interesting people we have out on the field every week and watching the chaos of the battles and trying to figure out what is going on.
7. Is there anything you would like to learn (Amtgard related) but never did?
I'm doing that right now with the politics.
8. What is your favorite event and why?
Well I've only been to Clan as a "big event". I don't really count little things like coronations and such as events so it would have to be clan. Hopefully I will soon have more events to choose from. I love camping and I love amtgard and the friends you make and the people you meet have such a profound effect on you for the rest of your life and most people don't realize it. So having them all together in one place from all over the country is just amazing.
9. What do you like most about Amtgard as a whole?
Like I said in number 8 and 1 the friends you make in amtgard affect you every day and you don't even realize it. I love the sense of family I get from the people I've gotten close to. It gives you a place you can go and do nothing while watching or do everything you can get involved in.
10. What do you dislike most about Amtgard as a whole?
The people who think that because you are color you are worthless and there is no point for you to be out on the field. I have run into that before.
11. What are your favorite game types?
I like watching jugging and I like reveing tournaments.
12. What are your least favorite game types?
Ditch battles there really doesn't seem to be a reason to the whole thing. No one is able to reve that stuff so people get their feelings and pride hurt.
13. Do you ever regret starting this game?
I did a few years ago when the problem with the color thing came up and then in that same land my marriage was in danger because some people didn't understand there is a time and place and in the personal, private lives of people amtgard does not belong nor do the politics. That land lost a whole family of members because of their inability to seperate reality from the game and their unwillingness to care about people and their private lives. However since I've moved here to PV I find the attitudes and maturity so much better and it is very refreshing to find that love for the game again.
14. If you could change one thing about Amtgard, what would you change?
Refer to number 13
15. Anything else you would like to add?
I am looking for performers for feast at midreign please e-mail me if you are interested.
