Why?
So ive been talking to some people from another LARP and they were talking about how they do shield checking and are aloud to grapple. Why doesn't Amtgard alow that? I mean, if a couple of real knights or whatever were fighting they would probably do whatever was necessary to win. Im not talking like nerve holds or punching people in the face, but just like grabbing their sword hand to prevent a strike and leave them open. No biggie, just wanted to know what people think.

It's a safety issue. The Amtgard rules have for a long time not allowed it for safety reasons. Now, I don't personally believe it to be unsafe when you have people of comparable size doing it, but in cases where the field age and size is as varied as our group, I don't think it's a good idea.
I know in Belegarth or Dagorhir or a few other games, it's allowed... but you'd have to start a chapter if you wanted to play a different game here.
